# SQLite Query Explainer: An Interactive Tool Running in the Browser

## AI commentary

> This article demonstrates how AI tools can help developers understand complex database concepts. If you frequently use SQLite for query optimization, this interactive tool is worth trying. Despite the author's warning about accuracy, the idea and innovation are highly noteworthy.

## At a glance

Inspired by Julia Evans, Simon Willison built the SQLite Query Explainer using Fable. This tool runs SQLite in the browser via Pyodide and provides readable explanations of EXPLAIN and EXPLAIN QUERY PLAN results, helping developers understand query plans. Although the author admits he cannot fully verify its accuracy, the tool still has practical value.

## Key points

- Based on Julia Evans' ideas about SQLite query plans
- Built with Fable (likely based on Claude)
- Runs SQLite in the browser via Pyodide
- Provides explanations for EXPLAIN and EXPLAIN QUERY PLAN results

Tool: SQLite Query Explainer Julia Evan's, in Learning a few things about running SQLite: Maybe one day I’ll learn to read a query plan. Big same.... which inspired me to have Fable build this interactive explain tool, which runs SQLite in Python in Pyodide in Web Assembly in the browser and adds a layer of explanation to the results of both EXPLAIN and EXPLAIN QUERY PLAN. Approach with caution, since I don't know enough about SQLite query plans to verify the results myself, but it seems cromulent enough to me.
