# Mojo Programming Language Now Open Source Under Apache 2.0

## AI commentary

> As someone who follows the Python ecosystem closely, I think the real significance of Mojo going open source is that it has stopped insisting on being a 'Python superset' and instead focuses on GPU programming. For AI engineers and infrastructure developers, this means a transparent, Python-flavored path to GPU development, and AI-assisted migration tools will make it even smoother. Anyone interested in Python performance or heterogeneous computing should pay attention.

## At a glance

Mojo🔥 first promised an open source release in May 2023. After shipping 1.0 last week, the team has now followed through by releasing the compiler and toolchain under an Apache 2 license. Originally, Mojo aimed to be a superset of Python so existing code could bootstrap its ecosystem. Around August 2025, that plan shifted: Mojo may or may not become a full superset of Python. The team notes AI-assisted coding tools already help migrate Python to Mojo, and future tooling will make this easier. Today Mojo is its own language, optimized to make GPU programming painless with Python-inspired syntax, even if not 100% compatible with existing Python code.

## Key points

- After releasing 1.0 last week, Mojo has open-sourced its compiler and toolchain under Apache 2.0.
- The original plan to become a Python superset has been adjusted; Mojo is now its own GPU-friendly language.
- AI-assisted coding tools are being used to migrate Python code to Mojo.
- The release fulfills a promise made since May 2023.

Mojo🔥 is now open source Mojo🔥 is now open source The Mojo programming language has been promising an open source release since May 2023. Last week they shipped their 1.0 and today they have followed through on that original promise, releasing the compiler and toolchain under an Apache 2 license. When Mojo first launched the stated goal was to produce a superset of Python, so existing Python code could be used to bootstrap their own ecosystem. That plan changed around August 2025: Mojo may or may not evolve into a full superset of Python, and it’s okay if it doesn’t. We’re encouraged by how well AI-assisted coding tools already help migrate Python to Mojo today, and we’re confident that future tooling and ecosystem maturity will make this evolution even smoother. Today Mojo is its own language, optimized to make GPU programming as painless as possible using syntax inspired by Python, if not 100% compatible with existing code.
